Octavia
Kai is the next of the siblings. He is in that awkward middle age where he is not old enough to help the family but old enough to really want to. Jay keeps encouraging Kai to enjoy being a kid while he can, but Kai won't hear it. Kai begrudgingly takes care of household chores since he's the only one left to do them. He's quite ambitious and constantly talks about leaving Octavia to find another mystical city when he is older.
Design Statement:
The stage itself is designed to feel precarious like it was supported by several ragged wooden supports coming out of the floor. It includes a lower, forward platform also supported in a similar fashion. The stage is meant to look like it’s made of wooden planks with the forward part meant to look like a sheet of metal roofing. The whole set is bookended by two mountainlike protrusions. They start a few feet in front of the scrim backing which allows for an escape on each side. Near the top of the left mountain is an elevated platform. This platform has its own escape in the form of a ladder at the back and another connects to the large, fixed platform (center left). This fixed platform appears to be connected to the stage by precarious wooden posts. Its floor is made of rusty sheet metal. Hanging from the ceiling (center right) is another similar platform. This one can move up and down due to it being suspended. Rather than going straight to the ceiling, the ropes go off diagonally in some cases to make it too feel more precarious. There is a bridge between the two and a rope ladder up to it. Also suspended from the ceiling is a blue and green bulb. It is just there for decoration and doesn’t have a functional purpose. In the back is a layer of scrim and translucent so the set can be lit to look like the sky or the night.
Jay is the oldest of the 3 siblings. She's like a mother to them after their mother fell ill and their father died in a tragic accident. She works as a stringer, someone whose job it is to repair the ropes that keep Octavia in the air. It's dangerous work and is physically grueling, but it's what she needs to do in order to make ends meet.
Luke is the baby of the family, and he looks just like his dad. He doesn't like that though and constantly reminds the other siblings that he is not a baby anymore. Since their dad died falling from the ropes of Octavia, the other siblings won't let him play or really leave their sight when he is outside the house. This dynamic causes Luke to have a sort of resentment for the other siblings.
