Play of Selves

Inspired by the photography of Iké Udé, Samuel Fasso, Nikki S. Lee, Cindy Sherman, and Yasumasa Morimura, students created their own alter egos. Designers created these characters by adapting the clothing at hand, drawing digital versions of themselves, or pasting themselves into a collage.

For the Play of Selves project, I wanted to exemplify upon smaller elements of my own life and make them into their own, living, breathing characters. The three chosen elements were crafting, sports, and a recluse lifestyle and each element ended up conveying a different emotion of comfort, anxiety, and longing, respectively. To tie all of these together, I kept sweaters present in all of them and gave them a separate look to make it pop.

For my Play of Selves design, I decided to focus on 1920s fashion and reimagined myself as a woman in that time period. I explored the famous “flapper” look and the significance behind what it meant in the era of liberation for women as well as lesser known sportswear and casual wear styles.

By manipulating and studying the Japanese Street Fashion style, I came upon these characters to be a part of my Play of Selves. I wanted to demonstrate their characteristics through a chronological sequence by designing appropriate attires for what I understood as Past, Present, and Future.
