Chiaroscuro Chambers

Designers created chambers for light using simple model making materials. They used a set of adjectives as a point of departure and used these models and their own film sets to develop one minute videos.

For my Chiaroscuro Chamber, I focused on exploring a design that is “organic” and “intimate”. I ultimately chose a lake house at night as my final design to build because I was drawn to the juxtaposition of nature at night as something that can create an intimate atmosphere despite the vastness of the open water and night sky.

The chamber demonstrates the dichotomy of energetic and deep through the columns in the back and the thin sheets of see-through materials on the sides. I played around with the presentation of the lighting with some materiality to show the energetic aspect. In contrast, the core structure of the stage demonstrates a deep, concrete-like, and massive appearance.

My Chiaroscuro Chamber video was created to be an exploration of the space I created within my chamber. Because my chamber was created with the words ‘ominous’ and ‘expansive’ in mind, there were numerous elements that each aided to the overall mood of the room, and I saw this video as an opportunity to walk the viewers through these elements while sharing a story fitting for the Halloween season it was created in. While many parts of the chamber were painted over during the production of this video, a majority of the scene had an original photo from the chamber which became the background for the events. Much of the lighting effects were also amplified in post to create a more extreme mood since the main idea of this project was to play around and explore the effect of lighting.
